Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.

If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you’re cooking.

Staying safe with household appliances by using kitchensafe

As families and friends gather together for large meals, it is important to remember to

keep the kitchen environment safe. Kitchen fires are the number one cause of home fires.

When cooking, there should be a three foot clearance around all kitchen appliances and cooking

tools, and the area should be kept clear of combustibles and flammable materials.

Children and pets should also be kept at least three feet away from cooking appliances when in use,

and the kitchen should never be left unattended if the oven, stove, toaster oven, or another

appliance is left on.

Cooking safely

  • Don’t leave pans unattended. Take them off the heat if you have to leave the room. Fire starts when your attention stops this is where kitchensafe steps in.

  • Turn saucepan handles so they don’t stick out from the hob

  • If the oil starts to smoke, it’s too hot. Turn off the heat and leave it to cool
  • Use an electric deep-fat fryer. They are less likely to overheat
  • Never pour water on hot fat.
